VILLA BALBIANELLO: the most exciting of the promontory Lake Como

A delightful Villa situated precipitously above the lake
At the end of the 18th century, the main access route to the Villa was a steep staircase leading up from the lake. Guests were welcomed by a motto engraved into the floor of the portico that looks out over the marina: “Fay ce que voudras” (“Do what you want”), a perfect description of the spirit of this “place of delights”, on which Cardinal Durini started work in 1787, where one could study and discuss literature and the arts. The splendid Villa del Balbianello rises up on a breathtaking sheer promontory above Lake Como. The loggia affords a beautiful view of the majestic lake: on the one side, you can see the Tremezzina area, which opens out onto the heart of the lake, whereas on the other you can gaze at Comacina Island. It is said that it was in the rooms located on the two sides of the gallery (the Library and the Music Room, now used as the Map Room) that Giuseppe Parini composed his ode “La Gratitudine”, which he dedicated to Cardinal Durini.
Art and memorabilia embellish the interiors
The interiors of the Villa remain redolent of the style choices made in the 1970s by the last owner, Milanese entrepreneur and explorer Guido Monzino. The rooms play host to a rich collection of Chinese, African and pre-Columbian art, alongside 18th-century English and French furniture. There is also a small museum housing documents and memorabilia from Monzino’s expeditions.
A garden with a breathtaking view
The true pride and joy of the Villa is the panoramic terraced garden, which is dominated by the elegant loggia. The garden is a bona fide masterpiece, in which every element relates to the lake, its shores and its mesmerising waters.

Villa Erba, architectural jewel of the XVIIIth century, was once the summer residence of the “Erba” family. Here, the great director Luchino Visconti, spent many of his summers and the rooms of the villa inspired the sets of some of his most famous masterpieces.

The Comacina Island is Lake Como’s only island. Nearly deserted today, it was inhabited back in Roman times. It had monuments already in the early Christian age (5th century) and grew in importance to becoming, in the 12th century one of Lario’s most powerful towns.
When the war broke out between Como and Milan, Isola Comacina (Comacina Island) sided with those from Milan and helped them destroy Como. It was its end - the revenge of the people of Como broke out in 1169: everything was destroyed and silence is the only thing remaining on the island. A part of the survivors migrated to the nearby coast and part to Varenna. Still today the beautiful ruins of a magnificent Roman Basilica dedicated to S.Eufemia.
We recommend a visit to the Island on the day of the Sagra dei Lumaghitt (Festival of the Small Floating Luminaries), which celebrates S. Giovanni on June 24th with grand illuminations on Lake Como and the mass celebrated on the ruins of the S.Eufemia basilica.

We always recommend our guests to take a boat for to see the Como lake from lake. The lake seen from the lake is an wonderful experience. You can enjoy views that the coastal roads of Lake Como you can not always to see.
The shores of Lake Como are still today a succession of small towns with ancient stone bell towers and sumptuous villas. In order to have a good vision of the beauties of the “Riviera” we highly recommend using the public boats. We recommend the day tickets that allow you to use boats as well as the ferries and visit more than one town with the same ticket. You may travel on  the hydrofoils with this type of ticket but this implies paying a supplement. The central Como lake ticket for example includes Menaggio, Varenna, Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Tremezzo and Lenno. Thanks to the car ferry service between  Cadenabbia and Bellagio, Bellagio and Varenna, Varenna and Menaggio, Menaggio and Bellagio it is possible to transport your car in order to reach the opposite side of the lake.
